Founded in 1956, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Vilnius Tech), previously known as the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute (VISI), is a public university in Vilnius, Lithuania, with a focus on technological sciences. There are over 11,000 students and nearly 1,000 academic staff over 10 faculties, which are the Antanas Gustaitis Aviation Institute, architecture, business management, civil engineering, creative industries, electronics, environmental engineering, fundamental sciences, mechanics and transport engineering. There are also 13 institutes, three research centres and 23 research laboratories. The campus is spread across the city of Vilnius, with the main buildings in the wooded Saulėtekis neighbourhood of the Antakalnis eldership. The Saulėtekis campus houses the two primary university dormitories and is accessible from Vilnius city centre by various buses. Other campuses are based in Vilnius Old Town where the university bookshop Technika and the architecture and the creative industries faculties are housed, and Naujamiestis where there are faculties of mechanics, transport engineering and electronics. In Naujininkai, near Vilnius International Airport, is the Antanis Gustatis Aviation Institute, named after Lithuanian aviation pioneer Antanas Gustatis. It was founded in 1993 to train pilots, air traffic controllers, aviation engineers and other aviation professionals. The integrated five-year programme in aircraft piloting is offered in English. Extracurricular activities offered to students include the choir Gabija, the theatre group Palėpė and the Lithuanian folk dance group Vingis. Notable alumni include Prime Ministers of Lithuania Algirdias Butkevičius, Rolandas Paksas and Gediminas Vagnorius and composer Kęstutis Antanėlis, who was expelled from VISI for staging a production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
