Overview

The Ural Federal University (UrFU), was formed in 1920, and was originally named after the first president of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin.  The university is the oldest in the Ural region, and was established in the town of Ekaterinburg by Vladimir Lenin and the Soviet revolutionary government.  The Ural Federal University participates in a number of international educational projects, and has connections with foreign universities. Education and training at the university is carried out in four main areas of knowledge, and aims to eliminate the shortage of engineering specialists in the region.  UrFU is known for organising many science competitions, conferences, workshops and forums, which aim to allow students to have an active social life, but also expand their knowledge.  The university infrastructure includes the summer and winter sport stadiums, 11 special sport halls, two ski bases, a skating rink and 14 sports grounds on campus territory. In 2007, UrFU constructed the Sport complex, and a university pool was opened in 2011. UrFU is a venue for the Vienna Music Film Festival – a key cultural event of Ekaterinburg and Russia. Live concerts are broadcast live on a giant screen in open air for thousands of guests to enjoy. One of the most famous graduates of the university is the former president of Russia, Boris Yeltsin. Ural Federal University is also a member of the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100
