Overview

Founded during the reign of Krishnaraja Woodeyar IV (the Maharaja of Mysore) in 1916, the University of Mysore is a public state university based in Mysore, Karnataka in India. It was the first university set up outside of the British administration in India, the sixth in India and the first in Karnataka. Comprising 122 affiliated colleges and five constituent colleges, there are approximately 53,000 students studying at the university. The university’s main campus (created in 1960) lies to the west of the Kukkarahalli Lake, while the university headquarters, Crawford Hall is situated to the east across the lake. To meet the needs of postgraduate students in suburban and rural areas, two satellite campuses were established: the Sir M.Visveswaraya Postgraduate Centre at Tubinakere in Mandya and the Mysore University Postgraduate Centre at Hemagangotri in Hassan. Students can study at one of 37 postgraduate departments, spanning five faculties: the faculty of arts, the faculty of science and technology, the faculty of commerce, the faculty of education and the faculty of law. Facilities include an amphitheatre, auditorium, swimming pool and a library, which holds over 800,000 books and 100,000 journal volumes. Located in the foothills of the Chamundi Hills, Mysore is 146km from the Karnataka state capital of Bangalore. It is spread across a 128.42km² area, with a population of about 890,000. Known for its striking building and palaces including the Mysore Palace, the city also welcomes many tourists from around the world for the Dasara Festival, a Hindu celebration to triumph the victory of good over evil.
