Overview

Demanding academic standards, intensive hands-on practice, first level research, and students seeking to create a better future are the objectives of this Peruvian university founded in 1961. This private university in Lima was established by a group of professors with extensive experience in teaching medicine to become an ongoing contributor to research in health and science in the country and the world. The school is considered one of the top medical schools in Peru especially after the addition of the specialties of stomatology, veterinary medicine, psychology, biology, chemistry, pharmacy, public heath and health administration, veterinary medicine and animal breeding and nursing. Although Cayetano is a small school with under 2,000 students, its focus on medicine has made it a significant centre of higher learning and scientific research in Peru. This status in Latin America has aided UPCH in establishing numerous agreements and collaborations with leading institutions from all over the world, including Johns Hopkins University, University of Washington, University of California San Diego, University of California Berkeley, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, and the University of Pennsylvania. The university has ties with the Tropical Medicine Institute in Latin America, which focuses on research in tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, malaria and HIV. Due to this UPCH became the first university in Peru to receive an international accreditation in 2006. Not only does the university offer baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees, but also courses, diplomas and postgraduate studies are available both physically and virtually. The logo of the university has been carefully designed as a yellow shield with the words "Spiritus ubi vult spirat" on the sides. In the centre is the Rod of Asclepius, which is representative of medicine and healing. The university has more than 12,000 alumni in Peru and North America that have contributed to the field through scientific research and innovation. Lima is a rich historical and cultural city. The mélange of the indigenous culture alongside Spanish colonialist remnants with a contemporary touch complete the cultural theme. There are archaeological sites like the "Huacas" (Adobe pyramids) as well as cinemas, theatres and museums.
