Overview

The State University of Ponta Grossa, or Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa (UEPG), was the product of a merger between several Brazilian state colleges in 1969. The State College of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of Ponta Grossa, State College of Pharmacy and Dentistry of Ponta Grossa, State College of Law of Ponta Grossa and the State College of Economic Sciences and Administration of Ponta Grossa (all of which previously worked independently) came to form UEPG. It is one of Paraná’s five state universities and has two campuses based in Ponta Grossa city (population approximately: 300,000) and Telêmaco Borba. In the centre-south of the state of Paraná, UEPG has advanced in many areas, including natural, biological and health sciences; engineering and agronomy; humanities, letters and arts; social sciences and law. On offer at UEPG are 39 undergraduate courses, as well as postgraduate programmes, master’s and doctoral degrees and seven distance learning courses. The university has expanded to include more than 9,000 undergraduate students and more than 1,000 graduate and doctoral students. Areas of focus for the coming decades include economic construction, sustainability, scientific and technological progress, and accessibility and social development. Its journalism department is among the 50 best in Brazil.
