Overview

Port Said University was originally established in 1975 as part of Helwan University. In 1976 it became a branch of Suez Canal University and in 2010 the Egyptian President decided to open Port Said University as an independent institution. There are currently 13 faculties on offer at the university: kindergarten, physical education, medicine, specific education, arts, science, management technology and information systems, nursing, education, commerce, engineering, pharmacy, and law. Students can study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Throughout the year Port Said University carries out various research projects. It is particularly committed to developing solutions for environmental problems faced by rural communities. One example of this is the production of a water desalination system powered by solar and biomass energy resources. This system produces fresh water for those living in rural areas using renewable energy. The university is based in Port Said, a city in northeastern Egypt. The university was founded in 1859 on a low sandy strip separating Lake Manzala from the Mediterranean Sea. The city sits on the western bank of the Suez Canal and is twinned with Port Fuad, which is situated on the eastern side of the canal. There is a free ferry that runs from Port Said to Port Fuad daily, allowing locals and tourists to travel easily between them. The two cities coexist to form a metropolitan area with over one million residents, which spans across two continents – Asia and Africa.
