Manipal Academy of Higher Education

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education is a private, research-based university in Karnataka, southern India. The university has more than 28,000 students from 57 different countries, taught by around 2,500 faculty members. Its main campus is situated in Manipal, on the outskirts of the city of Udupi, and branch campuses are located in Mangalore as well as Dubai and Malaysia. More than 350 academic programmes are offered across 31 disciplines, from diploma level to postgraduate and PhD courses. The fields of biggest focus at the university exist within health sciences, science, technology and management, and humanities, liberal arts and social sciences. Research is a major focus at the university, and the university has a large body of postgraduate research programmes alongside international research partnerships. Support is given to researchers to encourage technology transfer and commercialisation of projects. Teaching and research facilities are impressive and include a variety of scientific laboratories and a state-of-the-art innovation centre designed to facilitate multi-disciplinary research projects. Sports are an important part of community life, and sports facilities are offered at the university’s Manipal, and Mangalore campuses. The university’s indoor sports complex called the Marine is one of the largest sports centres in the country and includes racket ball courts, cricket and football pitches and a swimming pool. The centre is air-conditioned for year-round use. Students have the option of a study abroad programme for one semester of their course. A successful summer exchange programme also exists for students who want the chance to experience another culture without leaving the university for the main duration of their studies. Manipal is a popular destination in itself and is a good base for trekking and hiking in the surrounding hills and countryside. Goa, famous for its beaches, is five hours by train, and a popular option for weekend trips and holidays.
