Kazan National Research Technical University

The Kazan National Research Technological University (KNRTU) is a large higher education institution specialising in science and engineering. Based in Kazan city centre, the university is made up of 15 academic teaching and research institutes offering more than 100 courses from diploma, to undergraduate, graduate and PhD level. A total of around 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at the university, including around 900 PhD candidates. KNRTU partners with 24 other universities, research centres and international collaborators from 13 different countries. The university’s roots can be traced back to 1897, when it started out as Kazan United Industrial College. The college became a polytechnic institute in 1919, eventually gaining university status in 1992. KNRTU expanded once again to gain its research institute status in 2010. A rich number of extracurricular sports and activities take place on campus, and the university has a strong student union, which is split into several interest areas. Some of the activities taking place through the union include a comedy club, student journalism and volunteering programmes. Sport is integral to campus life, and the university is home to “KAI-Olymp”, one of the largest sports facilities in Russia. It includes a 4,000 square-metre sports hall, a martial arts gym, indoor football, boxing and an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool. A number of university sports teams take part in national and international championships, including basketball, volleyball and water polo. Seven student dormitories are available on site, and the main city campus is within easy walking distance of Kazan’s historic sights, museums and galleries.
