The Florida Institute of Technology is a private non profit, doctoral/research university located in Melbourne, Florida.
The university was founded in 1958, initially called the Brevard Engineering College, and was renamed the Florida Institute of Technology in 1966. The university was founded in the same year that NASA got its start.
There are seven main academic divisions focused on science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and aviation.
Students from more than 100 countries worldwide attend Florida Tech. Each year the university holds the International Festival as a celebration of cultural diversity and the international community among the students. International student societies showcase their cultures, food and traditional dress to the rest of the student body.
The university has 132 active student organisations on campus. This includes university-sponsored students' organisations such as the student government association, campus activities board, the homecoming committee and The Crimson, which is the award-winning student-run newspaper.
Other organisations include the anime club, amateur radio club, the dance association and the film society. There are also a lot of sports clubs that students can join such as flag football, ultimate frisbee, martial arts, ice hockey and Collegiate wrestling and baseball. The mascot of the university is a panther.
The institute has six on-campus residential halls, as well as apartment-style housing options located near the campus. There is also a student book shop, career management services, counselling and psychological services, disability services and a health centre on campus.
There is also plenty of varied on-campus facilities where students can spend their spare time such as the Botanical Garden and the official site of the Florida Tech jet dragster racing team.
